ALICE: All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment
Alpha Strategy: Storing extra logistics, as a hedge against inflation, and for use in barter and charity. This term was coined by economics writer John Pugsley. A PDF of Pugsley's book titled The Alpha Strategy is available for free download
APC: Armored Personnel Carrier. Also the brand name of a manufacturer of short-term backup power supplies.
Apgar: A scoring system used to evaluate the health of newborn babies, typically taken at one minute and five minutes after delivery
ARC: American Red Cross (Nicknamed "The Red Curse" by some SurvivalBlog readers)
ATL: Attempt to Locate. (Law enforcement term.) See also: BOLO
BIB: Bug-In Bag. A kit of essentials designed for "hunkering down", in place
Biochip: See RFID and NAIS.
BoB, BOB, or B-o-B: Bug-out Bag. Synonymous with G.O.O.D. Kit. See also: BIB, GOOD and INCH
BOL, B.O.L., or B.o.L.: Bug-out Location. Synonymous with retreat
BoV or BOV: Bug-out Vehicle. Synonymous with G.O.O.D. Vehicle. See also: POV
BTP: Boston T. Party the pen name of a libertarian writer.
Carrington Event: A naturally occurring EMP-like effect, caused by a large Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) of the Sun. (See also: CME and EMP.)
CM: Compressed Meals (The U.S. Army' new alternative to MREs, with a freeze dried entree. These are about 2/3s the size and weight of an MRE.
CME: Coronal Mass Ejection. (Solar flares.) See also: Carrington Event and EMP. C-Ration: Combat ration. The U.S. Army canned field rations that were replaced by MREs in the mid-1980s.

Shelf Life: The useful life of of product in home storage. In the context of foods: The period of time that a processed food can be stored before changes in color, flavor, texture or the number of micro-organisms make it unacceptable. Electromagnetic pulse (EMP) – an extreme level of electromagnetic energy sufficient to burn out computer chips that may be caused by solar flares or by atmospheric nuclear explosions. Such an event would disable the Internet, telephones, computers, and devices that rely on computer controls, including automobiles, the electrical grid, and household appliances.
Goblin: A criminal miscreant. Coined (in the survivalist context) by Jeff Cooper.
Golden Horde: The anticipated large mixed horde of refugees and looters that will pour out of the metropolitan regions WTSHTF. Coined (in the survivalist context) by James Wesley Rawles.
G.O.O.D.: Get Out of Dodge (City). Fleeing urban areas in the event of a disaster. Coined by James Wesley Rawles.
G.O.O.D. Kit: Get Out of Dodge Kit. Synonymous with Bug-Out Bag (BOB).
INCH Bag: “I’m never coming home bag”. Designed to support the life of its owner indefinitely, as opposed to other BOBs which are oriented toward gaining short term advantage and sustaining life for a fixed length of time.
Pollyanna or Polly: Someone who is in denial about the disruption that might be caused by the advent of a large scale disaster.
Cbw = chemical biological warfare
Prepper: A synonym for survivalist that came into common usage during the late 1990s. Used interchangeably with survivalist much as retreater was in the 1970s. Refers to one who is prepared or making preparations.
SHTF: Shit Hits the Fan. A term used generically by survivalists to describe disaster situations
TEOTWAWKI: The End of the World as We Know It. Coined by Mike Medintz.
